Beautifully designed and made midcentury "Contempora" buffet by J.L. Metz, made in the 1960's. Metz was one of the many higher-end furniture makers that prospered in the 20th century, especially after WWII. A family-owned manufacturer that prided themselves on building stylish, unique pieces. The "Contempora" line offered multiple products for the living, dining and bedrooms. This high Chest is made of fruitwood, and exhibits their "Weathered Cherry" finish. The drawers have a solid wood Front, solid oak dovetailed sides and mahogany bottoms. The doors have deep frames that set off a panel of burled walnut. The case sits on legs and stretchers of patinated brass, very much like Mastercraft Furniture would offer a decade later.
