A very attractive and unusual French antique snuff box made from gilt metal with a hand painted porcelain plaque.
The porcelain plaque depicts a picture of an exotic lady and reads Alger, it has colourful decoration of plique a jour enamel in relief of moons, stars, circles and diamonds.
Inside the snuff box is a set of 26 hand carved bovine bone, Napoleonic prisoner of war dominoes, each enamelled with red and black accents, small in size at just under 0.5" in length, hailing from the Napoleonic wars 1803-1815.
The snuff box itself dates from around 1810-20, the two were together when we got them, maybe a survivor of the wars crafted his dominoes when in a dire position and later found wealth keeping them as a token of his struggle, maybe they were taken by a captor from an ailing prisoner, either way they have a story to tell that we will never know but they go together in a perfect contrast.
It has a spring hinged lid that holds it closed when travelling.
It is in incredible condition for the age and is still more than usable.
A fabulous antique collectors piece from the early 1800's.
Approx measurements:
