A Signed and hand made sterling silver modernist bespoke necklace by listed artist Calman Shemi.
Calman Shemi Argentine Artist and Sculptor: B. 1939. Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939.A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied with the Italian-Argentine sculptor Libero Badii and the German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehman. In 1961, he settled in Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia where he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor, working in wood and clay. Several of Shemi's large-scale fiberglass and polyester projects are situated in various public buildings throughout the world. Sculpture dominated his early years as an artist. In 1977, while living in the Kibbutz he developed the idea of the "soft painting" medium. In his soft paintings, he begins with a color drawing done to scale. He then layers irregularly shaped pieces of variously textured and colored fabrics resulting in vibrant compositions infused with exuberant color and explosive movement. During the last years, Shemi has worked intensively with wall sculptures laser-cut steel, his new field of expression. Over the last fifteen years, he has held more than seventy one-man-shows in the USA, Japan, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Israel. Calman Shemi has achieved an art expression that has received international acclaim and acceptance.
This necklace is an exceptional piece and is only one of two fine sterling silver necklaces that I am aware Calman Shemi created. The necklaces has hand engraved and sensuously curved petal like sections. Some are gilt to give them a warm glow. The central one is set with a serious of genuine natural pyrope garnets which are beautifully faceted and perfectly matched in color.
Each shape is complementary to the next one but different to every other shape. They all seem to balance off each there is tension, elegance and softness all at the same time. Similarly the engravings on the curved complementary planes of the necklace create movement and excitement with designs that are look like both a bustling city and aerial views of an every changing landscape. It is an amazing one of a kind necklace.
The necklace secures with a hook clasp and a specially designed safety chain. It is set with 12 garnets each weighing approximately 7 points for a total carat weight of 0.84 carats.
It measures 16" in length and is 3" wide at the widest.
This amazing necklace is in excellent condition.
Whilst it is not marked for sterling silver it has been professionally tested and we guarantee solid sterling silver.
What I love most about this necklace is that it seems part painting and part sculpture as well as fine jewelry. It literally is wearable art. Unlike most modernist pieces which are made in a limited series this is a one of a kind piece you will never see again. When you consider it was made by a listed and well known artist it makes it even more exclusive and special.
